Sinclair ZX Spectrum: 25 today | The Register
I never had a Spectrum or a ZX81 but many of my friends did. I cut my coding teeth on the more obscure but much more powerful Texas Instruments TI-994A. It had speech synthesis, took cartridges, supported extended basic and had so few games I was forced to stasrt writing my own.
The level of knowledge we had to have about our computers was driven by the lack of software, the need to type in games from magazines and then debug them. I wonder if the console generation will spawn the same kind of programmers that my generation did. Sure there are hackers but it is a niche. Most computer users and console owners don't need that level of knowledge. And maybe as future content producers they don't anyway. Or maybe I am just getting old and nostalgic....
