Steve Jobs live from WWDC 2007 - Engadget
The future is bright and it is Ajax according to Steve today. Ajax on the iPhone and Safari on Windows. For the iPhone this is clearly a play against Java and full Ajax enablement would give a level of integration that Java could have, but clearly will not on the iPhone, if Java exists at all.
Making Safari the engine used to develop iPhone apps is clearly a smart move for Apple and makes a windows version of Safari a requirement.
The problem on both the desktop and Phone is the large portfolio of existing Java content and I am not convinced Apple can ignore it. They don't today on Mac OS X. Full Java SE available.
However, automatically mobilizing existing Ajax content is pretty compelling, especially for developers who are expected to port if they want to move content in Java or Flash to the mobile space. Of course this is Moores law in practice as all they are really doing is solving the problem by putting a fuly fledged browser engine on the device. So they are really not announcing anything new, but they are putting more wood behind the Ajax arrow and hoping to send it right into the heart of Java and Flash. Or maybe they are just trying to placate the developers.
The real news here is that Apple has managed to open the iPhone up to 3rd party developers without actually opening up the iPhone to 3rd party developers....Sweet
