Before you get as excited as I did by this blog title, stop, take a breath and read on.
Apple sneaks Java support onto the iPhone | Ed Burnette | ZDNet.com
Jazelle is just hardware acceleration for Java. You still need a Java implementation in software running on the phone. It is a bit like saying that because there is a 3D graphics chip in the phone then Java can take advantage of it. Doesn't mean Java is on the phone. Jazelle comes for free with the ARM chip. Apple couldn't exactly request its removal.
The MVM information is also misleading. Not really anything to do with Jazelle but again the software implementation of the stack around it.
And the SavaJe connection is irrelevant.
"..but Apple could, if they wanted, ship a software upgrade to enable it."
Sure. They can also enable Java via a software update whether or not Jazelle is in there. Doesn't make it any more likely.
Does not change anything about the lack of Java or even make it more likely that Apple will implement it.
Shame.....
