To understand where I am coming from you first need to imagine that you have been using an iPhone for a week. If you had been doing that you would have slowly noticed that you were no longer using any of those special "mobile" versions of your favourite websites. You are not skiping over certain emails because it will be easier to read them on your desktop. This sounds obvious but for many people this will be a real expectation changing experience.
Java ME solved a real problem for mobile developers. How to target the same content to multiple devices without too much porting (how much is up for debate). Whether you agree or not, it does a pretty good job of levelling the playing field.
The thing is, I am not missing Java ME on my iPhone. I dont want to play games and that is the vast majority of the content.
No, my expectations have been raised and what I want is full Java SE support in my browser. I want Safari to give me the full Java experience because it has raised my expectations for a mobile device. It renders standrad pages and makes them more navigable than any mobile device ever has.
Lets hope more people feel this way and Steve changes his mind. If the iPhone is really based off of Mac OS X then you can also bet they have Java running in the browser. Just not in production.
Oh, and I need Flash too :-)
